Sensory Play: What It Is, Why It Matters & How to Get Started

Sensory play is one of the best ways for babies to learn - it’s a playtime filled with interesting textures, exciting sounds and new experiences. And the best part? They’re having so much fun, they don’t even realise they’re building essential skills along the way!

But if you’ve ever wondered What actually counts as sensory play?, When should I start?, or Do I need to spend hours setting up activities? - you’re in the right place.

In this blog, I’ll break down what sensory play is, why it’s so important for your baby and how you can start playing together today (no stress, no mess, and definitely no overcomplicated Pinterest setups).

What Is Sensory Play?

Sensory play is a way for babies to explore the world - touching different textures, listening to new sounds, watching things move and yes, putting everything in their mouths (because, well, of course).

From day one, babies learn through their senses. That’s why they stare at bold patterns, grab your hair with a surprisingly strong grip and get so fascinated by a crinkle.

So when you shake a rattle, swish a sensory scarf, or let them splash in the bath? That’s sensory play.

You don’t need a mountain of toys or a degree in child development - you’re probably already doing it without even realising!

When Should You Start Sensory Play?

Honestly? Day one.

Newborns might not be able to grab toys just yet, but they can still experience different textures on their hands and feet, look at bold patterns and listen to gentle sounds. After a few months, they’ll start engaging so much more - reaching out, batting at things, responding to noises.

And from then on? It just keeps getting better! The more they explore, the more those little brain connections strengthen and grow.

Sensory play can grow and change as your baby does - so just follow their lead!

Why Is Sensory Play So Important?

Besides being a great way to keep your baby entertained for more than 2 minutes (we love a win), sensory play actually helps with brain development.

Here’s what it does:

Boosts motor skills – Whether they’re grasping, banging or squishing, sensory play strengthens little hands and bodies.

Encourages language development – Playing with different textures and sounds helps babies build connections between words and experiences.

Supports problem-solving – Every time your baby explores, they’re figuring out how things work - cause and effect, object permanence, all that good stuff.

Helps with emotional regulation – Ever noticed how babies calm down when they watch bubbles float or listen to soft music? Yep, sensory play can be soothing, too.

Sensory play doesn’t mean going to baby groups every day – you can do this all in the comfort of your own home!

How to Start Sensory Play at Home (Without the Overwhelm!)

If “sensory play” makes you think of elaborate Pinterest setups with rainbow-coloured rice everywhere, breathe easy. It doesn’t have to be that way.

Here are a few simple, no-faff ways to bring sensory play into your baby’s day:

Keep it simple – One great sensory toy is better than a million unused ones. Things like sensory scarves, textured balls and light-up toys give babies so much to explore.

Follow their cues – Some babies love noisy, high-energy play, while others prefer gentle, slow experiences. Let them show you what they enjoy!

Make it part of your day – Sensory play doesn’t need to be another thing on your to do list! Chat to your baby while changing their nappy. Let them feel different textures, get out on a walk. Play peekaboo with a scarf. It all counts!

Choosing the Right Toys

Some are incredible for development, while others are just…well, a lot of plastic that ends up forgotten in a toy box.

With the right materials and guidance, sensory play can give your baby a head start in life, but remember, it’s important to make sure that it’s safe!

Unfortunately not all sensory resources are created equally..

All the sensory toys I stock are safety-tested to strict UK toy standards, so you know they’re safe for your baby to explore (because let’s be real, it’s going in their mouth at some point!).

If you’re not sure where to start, a pre-made sensory box is a great way to try out different textures and sounds.

And if you love picking things out yourself, I have a full range of sensory toys so you can build your own little collection.

So, with that I am offering 15% off your first order!  Grab your discount code and start shopping for your baby’s sensory journey today!
