Tummy Time: What’s the Big Deal?

Tummy Time: What’s the Big Deal?

If you’ve got a baby, you’ve probably heard a lot about tummy time.

“Make sure you do it every day!”, “It’s so important for their development!”, “Try doing it after every nappy change!”

Okay… but why? And what if your baby hates it?

Let’s break it down.

What Is Tummy Time?

Tummy time is exactly what it sounds like - giving your baby time to lie on their tummy (while they’re awake and supervised).

Why Is Tummy Time Important?

Tummy time isn’t just a box to tick - it really does play a big role in your baby’s physical development:

Strengthens muscles – Helps build their neck, back and shoulders.

Supports motor skills – Encourages rolling, crawling and even sitting later on.

Prevents flat spots – Tummy time varies the position your baby lies in, which can help prevent head flattening.

Boosts coordination – Helps them learn how their body moves and works.

When Should You Start Tummy Time?

You can start tummy time from birth! But don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be long stretches straight away.

👉 Begin with just a few minutes, two or three times a day.

👉 Gradually build up as your baby gets stronger and more confident.

👉 If they’re not a fan at first, that’s okay - there are plenty of ways to ease them into it.

What If My Baby Hates Tummy Time?

Not all babies love lying on their tummy and that’s totally normal! Here are some tricks to make it easier:

Start small – Even one or two minutes at a time is a win!

Try different positions – Lie back and place baby on your chest or hold them across your lap

Use a rolled up towel – Placing one under their chest can give them extra support.

Bring in toys – A black and white toy or crinkly scarf can grab their attention.

Sing or chat to them – Your face and voice are their favourite things!

Make tummy time part of the routine – By adding it into daily life it becomes less of ‘a thing’ and should help your baby get used to it faster.
